Hilary Finch at Covent Garden
It seemed an eternity before the first notes murmured their way into life. Charles Mackerras had only to walk towards the podium, and the auditorium was in an uproar of long, warm applause. It was, after all, Mackerras who gave us Katya Kabanova in the first place. He conducted the London premiere of Janácek’s opera in 1951 at Sadler’s Wells: it was the first of the composer’s operas to be seen in Britain.
