Edward Elgar's eminence in British music, 150 years after his birth, is assured.
During this anniversary year his music is being played up and down the land, from January to December: rare as well as familiar works, as a glance at the Elgar Society Web site (www.elgar.org) shows. There are many broadcasts, celebrations and major publications. But exactly what Elgar stood for and what is unique about his music are being questioned more than ever.
At the Salzburg Festival, anything but the Age of Reason

SALZBURG: Last year the Salzburg Festival observed the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth by staging all 22 of his operas. This year the festival almost seems to be turning its back on the city's favorite son. For his first year as artistic director, Jürgen Flimm has chosen to explore "The Nocturnal Side of Reason," a theme seemingly antithetical to Mozart, who is traditionally regarded as a quintessential Enlightenment figure. Expressing a skeptical view of reason, Flimm asks in the program book "Who has ever heard of a rational love?"
