Americans can't write opera. Sure, we have musical theater, which has led to some operatic-cross breeds like "Candide," "Sweeney Todd" and "Porgy and Bess," but there isn't a single American opera that has made its way into regular repertoire. The American operas that typically premiere at the Met or New York City Opera are adaptations of familiar novels like "The Great Gatsby," "Little Women"
