When Mihoko Fujimura graduated from music college in Munich in 1995, her assumption was that one of Germany’s more than 60 opera houses would offer her a job. After her first audition she repaired to the theatre canteen, bumping into the director on her way out. He told her she had charisma and a beautiful voice, but they had decided to take a German singer.
