Tchaikovsky and Shakespeare
Deutsche Grammophon will release Tchaikovsky & Shakespeare, a new recording by Gustavo Dudamel and the the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, on March 1 internationally and on March 9 in the U.S.  As the title suggests, the repertoire on the album includes works by Tchaikovsky that were inspired by the Bard's plays: his three Overture-Fantasies Romeo and JulietHamlet and The Tempest.

Tchaikovsky & Shakespeare is being released to coincide with the next LA Phil LIVE transmission to movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada on March 13, which features the same program as the album plus readings of the Bard's works by well-known actors.
LA Phil announces 2011-12 season

Gustavo Dudamel in front of Disney HallEarlier this month, Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced their 2011/12 season, the Venezuelan conductor's third as Music Director. In the upcoming season, Dudamel will conduct the LA Phil in 14 weeks of subscription concerts that include two LA Phil commissions, both of which are world premieres, plus a concert as part of the Green Umbrella new music series that includes an LA Phil commission and world premiere.  In addition, Dudamel's 2011/12 season with the LA Phil features large-scale projects focusing on works by Mahler, Mozart and John Adams.  

In other news, while on their recent tour of Europe, Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced that the Venezuelan conductor's contract as Music Director will be extended through the orchestra's 2018/19 centennial season.


Dudamel to conduct four programs at Hollywood Bowl this summer

Hollywood BowlDudamel kicks off his summer season with the LA Phil on July 12 and 14 by performing two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl with the Chinese pianist Lang Lang.  The program for these performances includes Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.  Dudamel then changes gears to opera when he conducts a concert performance of Puccini's epic Turandot, featuring soprano Christine Brewer in the title role, on July 17.

Following these performances, Dudamel presents an all-Mozart program with the Phil on July 19.  Works to be performed include the Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart's Symphony No. 41, "Jupiter," and Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5, featuring Gil Shaham as the soloist.  For his last concert on July 21, Dudamel conducts the LA Phil and another violin virtuoso, Pinchas Zukerman, in Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, as well as  several works of Johann Strauss II.

New subscriptions for the Hollywood Bowl 2011 summer season are now available, and the Hollywood Bowl box office opens for single ticket sales on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
