Bolívars and Dudamel embark on European tour

Dudamel leading the SBYO
Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela embark on a five-concert, three-country tour of Europe this summer, beginning on August 1 at the Salzburg Festival with a concert at the historic Felsenreitschule. For this first performance, the conductor and orchestra perform Tchaikovsky's three Shakespeare-inspired orchestral fantasies, featuring narrations by the noted Shakespearean actor Simon Callow.  Dudamel and the Bolívars also recorded this repertoire on their most recent offering with Deutsche Grammophon, Tchaikovsky & Shakespeare. For a second concert at the Salzburg Festival on August 3, this time at the Grosses Festspielhaus, they perform Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection," with soloists Miah Persson, soprano, and Anna Larsson, contralto. The concert is being presented as part of the festival's "Mahler Scenes" series, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the composer's death.

Following the Salzburg performances, Dudamel and the Bolívars bring the Mahler program to London for an already sold-out appearance at the 2011 BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall on August 5. The performance will be aired live on BBC Radio 3 and broadcast on television August 6 on BBC Two and August 28 on BBC Four.  For the final concerts on their European tour, Dudamel and the Bolívars travel to Istanbul, Turkey for performances on August 8 and 9 at the Haliç Congress Center. The first program features Tchaikovsky's three Shakespeare-inspired orchestral fantasies in addition to the composer'sFrancesca da Rimini, and the second program includes works by Ravel, Castellanos, Chavez, and Stravinsky.

Dudamel to kick off GSO's 2011/12 season this September with Mahler 7, world premiere, and Nordic tour

GSO Logo
This September Dudamel will open the 2011/12 season of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, his fifth as Music Director, by conducting concerts of Mahler's Seventh Symphony on September 8, 9 and 10. The next week finds Dudamel leading the orchestra in a program that includes the world premiere of Karin Rehnqvist's Tiger Touch, Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with Martin Fröst as soloist, and Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony. Tiger Touch is being commissioned by the GSO in honor of its Maestro's 30th birthday, which he celebrated earlier this year.

Following concerts in Gothenburg on September 14 and 15, Dudamel and the GSO then take this program on the road for a short Scandinavian tour, performing in Oslo on September 16 and in Reykjavik on September 18. For the final concert in his September run with the GSO, Dudamel leads the orchestra in a single performance of John Adams's Slonimsky's Earbox, Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony No. 3, and Schumann's Concerto for Four Horns.

NOVIDADES EM DVD

Verdi: Les vêpres siciliennes

Verdi: Les vêpres siciliennes

Recorded live at the Amsterdam Music Theatre, 23 & 29 September, 2010

French version

Barbara Haveman (Hélène), Lívia Ághová (Ninetta), Burkhard Fritz (Henri), Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester (Guy de Montfort), Balint Szabo (Jean Procida), Hubert Francis (Thibault), Fabrice Farina (Danieli), Rudi de Vries (Mainfroid), Roger Smeets (Robert), Jeremy White (Le Sire de Béthune) & Christophe Fel (Le Comte de Vaudemont)
Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra & Koor van De Nederlandse Opera, Paolo Carignani (conductor) & Christof Loy (director)
Les vêpres siciliennes, like the similarly epic Don Carlos, was conceived as a grand opéra for Paris and is driven by the tensions between private passions and public politics. Originally set during Sicily’s 13th-century uprising against French rule, in Christof Loy’s staging for the Netherlands Opera the action is transposed to a 1940s world of sudden violence and shadowy double-dealing. Imaginatively cast and idiomatically conducted, the performance presents this magnificent score in its entirety, including the allegorical ballet The Four Seasons.

The vulnerable young woman at the heart of Janacek's breakthrough opera is a signature role for the English soprano Amanda Roocroft. Here, in Stéphane Braunschweig's clear but deeply affecting production, she is partnered by the Slovak tenor Miroslav Dvorsky, as the man through whom she finds redemption, love and hope. The complex figure of the Kostelnicka becomes both tormentor and tormented in this fearless interpretation by the great dramatic soprano Deborah Polaski.

Obsessive in gambling and in love, the soldier Hermann is the protagonist of Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, based on a story by Pushkin. He is smitten with the aristocratic Lisa and fixated on learning the winning secret of ‘the three cards’ from her grandmother, the Countess, played by iconic contralto Ewa Podles. This opulent production from Barcelona’s Liceu captures St Petersburg in the era of Catherine the Great, while the house’s Music Director Michael Boden conducts a large and impressive cast.

RENAUD E GAUTIER CAPUÇON

Violinist Renaud Capuçon with his brother, cellist Gautier Capuçon, at the Royal Albert Hall: ‘Here was fraternity,
as well as égalité, of a kind that drew musical sparks.’ Photograph: Andy Hall for the Observer

capucon brothers proms
