Boston Lyric Opera's season finale of Le Nozze di Figaro (seen April 29) was a triumph, a display of spectacular staging, vibrant acting and gorgeous singing. Like the company's Eugene Onegin two seasons ago, this was a production that would be the envy of any opera company in the world.

Boston Lyric Opera's season finale of Le Nozze di Figaro (seen April 29) was a triumph, a display of spectacular staging, vibrant acting and gorgeous singing. Like the company's Eugene Onegin two seasons ago, this was a production that would be the envy of any opera company in the world.
As the Count and Susanna, Paulo Szot and Ailyn Pérez were marvelous. Szot's befuddlement at constantly being made the fool was all the more endearing given his handsome presence. And Pérez made Susanna sweet but still nobody's fool. Her handling of "Deh vieni, non tardar" was particularly memorable; as she floated up to a ravishing B-flat, one could feel Ketelsen's Figaro squirming in anguish. Jennifer Casey Cabot sang well enough as the Countess, but her two arias suffered from a lack of dramatic point, and she had trouble negotiating her break, particularly in "Dove sono." In her comedic scenes with Susanna, Cabot seemed more at ease, but compared to the other cast members, she registered as pretty bland.
