
Following two weeks of concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, including the first
LA Phil LIVE transmission to movie theaters, Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic embark on their first European tour together in late January. The 16-day, seven-country trip to Portugal, Spain, Germany, England, France, Hungary, and Austria begins with concerts in Lisbon on January 21 and 22 and ends with two performances at the legendary Musikverein in Vienna on February 4 and 5. Other stops along the tour are: Madrid (January 23), Cologne (25 and 26), London (27 and 28), Paris (30 and 31), and Budapest (February 2 and 3). On this tour, Dudamel and the LA Phil will present two separate programs. One will encompass John Adams's
Slonimsky's Earbox, Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 1 "Jeremiah" with mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor as the soloist, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. The other program will consist solely of Mahler's colossal Symphony No. 9.
The January 27 performance will be broadcast live in the United States as part of American Public Media's Classical Live series. The two London concerts will be broadcast in the UK on February 16 and 17 on Classic FM as part of its Full Works Concert program.
Following the Euorpean tour, Dudamel reunites with the LA Phil for a series of concerts including the second in a series of three LA Phil LIVE transmissions this season on March 13.. The program, Dudamel Conducts Tchaikovsky, presents the Russian composer's three Overture-Fantasies inspired by Shakespeare plays:
Romeo and Juliet, Hamletand
The Tempest. Interspersed between these symphonic poems will be readings from the bard's works by a cast of leading actors.
