Mahler’s Eighth doesn’t really need 1,000 performers – about 500 will do nicely. But it does require a massive choir (assembled last Friday from the London Symphony Chorus, the London Philharmonic Choir, the Brighton Festival Chorus, the London Chorus and the New London Children’s Choir) and also, of course, the eight lusty soloists needed to lead the singing. Several of the latter must have voices of Italian- operatic calibre to get through the expanded orchestra (which they all did here, admirably); indeed, the Eighth is more or less the grand opera that Mahler never wrote. It was quite right to have the distinguished Italian conductor Daniele Gatti to conduct them all, and in the Albert Hall they carried their weight with resounding fervour.
