The Metropolitan Opera Guild named five outstanding individuals as winners of the second annual Opera News Awards last week. Designed by the long-running magazine to acknowledge exceptional contributions to the world of opera, honours were given to tenor Ben Heppner; Metropolitan Opera and Boston Symphony music director, James Levine; bass René Pape; soprano Renata Scotto; and soprano Deborah Voigt.
