John von Rhein: Symphony orchestras lose when principal players jump ship
The recent news that Mathieu Dufour, principal flute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1999, has also accepted that position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, apparently on a trial basis, for the 2009-10 season, got me thinking about what it no longer means to be a first-chair player at a major orchestra.

Lyric Opera is back for a new season, one of getting back to the basics of great stars, singing. The programming is, as John von Rhein puts it, "Tried, true and comfortably familiar." But familiar works, as with oft-heard symphonies, can free your mind to focus on the talent. And for this Lyric season, that means vocal star power of the kind that would have people showing up even if these folks were just singing the telephone book.
