Viktoria Mullova & the Matthew Barley Ensemble

This week, Viktoria Mullova is the special guest of theAuditorium du Louvre. The virtuoso violinist will showcase music from her latest album The Peasant Girl.

Born in Moscow, her extraordinary talent captured international attention when she won the first prize at the 1980 Sibelius Competition and the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982. She is now known as a violinist of exceptional versatility and musical integrity.

As on the album, Viktoria Mullova will be joined for the event by the Matthew Barley Ensemble. They will perform such different musics as Kodaly's and Bartók's, Gypsy music and Jazz classics by the likes of John Lewis and Weather Report.

The Berliner Philharmonikerperforms a concert each year in one of the biggest and most beautiful outdoors theatre in the world, the Waldbühne in Berlin.

Watch the 2007 edition of the Waldbühne with the Berliner Philharmoniker, under the baton of its actual music director, Sir Simon Rattle. As a guest, the great British pianist Stephen Hough masterfully performs Rachmaninov’s famousRhapsody, a series of variations onPaganini’s Capriccio No. 24. The orchestra keeps on with its series of rhaspodies and travels from Delius, Enesco, Debussy to Dvořák.

Anoushka Shankar, together with Indian and Flamenco musicians such as the singer Sandra Carrasco and the violonist Padma Shankar, presented in July 2011 the melodies of her albumTraveller at the Festival de Músiques Religioses i del Món de Girona. The concert was webcast live on medici.tv.

The fascinating Russian virtuosoMaxim Vengerov lent radiance toClaudio Abbado's Gala performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1996.

Together with the Swedish Radio Choir, they performed a "Gypsy" programme including theHungarian Dances by Brahms, the beautiful Tzigane by Ravel or the excerpt of La Cenerentola byRossini.
