This week,
From October 11 to 14, Gustavo and the LA Phil present a new production of Oliver Knussen’s opera Where the Wild Things Are, a setting of Maurice Sendak’s classic. The LA Phil’s staging features video projections that bring to life the iconic hand-drawn illustrations of Sendak’s tale. Ravel was an early influence for Knussen, and Gustavo pairs Where the Wild Things Are with the French composer’s Mother Goose, also accompanied by video created by British director Netia Jones.
On October 25, Gustavo Dudamel reunites with his colleague Daniel Barenboim for a concert that celebrates the Argentine-Israeli pianist and maestro’s 70th birthday. For the occasion, Gustavo leads the Filarmonica della Scala in the world premiere of Elliott Carter’s Dialogues II, commissioned by La Scala and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden for this special anniversary. The concert also features Barenboim at the keyboard, with Gustavo leading the entire ensemble, in Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor and Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
This November, Gustavo Dudamel returns to the Teatro alla Scala to conduct Verdi’s tragic masterpieceRigoletto. This drama of betrayal, revenge, and a daughter’s love marks Gustavo’s Verdian opera debut at the famed Milan house, which celebrates Verdi's bicentenary this season. Gustavo will lead all seven performances of Rigoletto from November 6 to 17.
