2013 MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR

Gustavo Dudamel has been namedMusical America's 2013 Musician of the Year. The Venezuelan conductor received the honor at a ceremony at New York's Lincoln Center last month, where his mentor, El-Sistema founder Dr. José Antonio Abreu, was also named Musical America's 2013 Educator of the Year. In announcing the award, the publication praised Gustavo for his “charisma, tireless advocacy for music education, and expressive music-making.”

GUSTAVO ON THE CHARLIE ROSE SHOW

Just after Gustavo and the Bolívars arrived in New York for their Carnegie Hall performances, the Venezuelan conductor sat down with Charlie Rose to talk about music and El Sistema and to announce the Dudamel Foundation. Watch their conversation here.

GUSTAVO BEGINS NEW YEAR WITH ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Gustavo begins the New Year with a return to the podium of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducting a week-long series of eight concerts that feature cellist Emanuele Silvestri and the music of Barber, Strauss, Haydn, and Mozart.

For their January 15, 16, 18, & 19 Tel Aviv performances, Gustavo and the IPO present Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 alongside Strauss’s tone poems Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel in a program that opens with Barber's tender Adagio for Strings>>More

MOZARTWOCHE WITH THE VIENNA PHILHARMONIC

Gustavo returns to the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic on January 26, conducting the esteemed ensemble at Salzburg's Großes Festspielhaus as part of the Austrian town's annual Mozartwoche. Wagner's Siegfried-Idyll prefaces Mozart's D Minor Piano Concerto K466, to be played by Portuguese guest pianist Maria Joao Pires. Gustavo's Mozartwoche program with the Vienna Philharmonic concludes with the composer's "Posthorn" Serenade. Details here.

Last year, Gustavo, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Deutsche Grammophon released a special charity LP, which represents the Venezuelan's debut with the iconic Austrian ensemble. Proceeds from the album benefit the San Vicente núcleo of El Sistema in the Aragua State of Venezuela. Order it here.

RETURNING TO THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC JANUARY 31 TO FEBRUARY 3

At the end of January, Gustavo takes the stage of the Philharmonie Berlin once again, conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with guest pianist Lang Lang. Gustavo will lead the acclaimed ensemble in two tone poems by Richard Strauss: Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. Samuel Barber's beloved Adagio for Strings opens the program, which follows with Béla Bartók's arresting Second Piano Concerto. Concerts take place January 31 and February 1, 2, & 3. Join the audience.
