THE GRAMOPHONE MONTH
We’ve devoted the feature section of our February issue to celebrating the music of Verdi. Drawing on the unique insight of Verdi specialists such as Renée Fleming, Sir Mark Elder, Bryn Terfel and Gianandrea Noseda, as well as our own expert writers, we explore how he wrote the masterpieces he did, and recommend the recordings to hear. It’s out now, and we hope it will whet your appetite for the many major Verdi performances and releases 2013 offers.
Elsewhere in this newsletter, find out what lies behind the latest classical music headlines, read an interview with cellist Alisa Weilerstein about recording Elgar's Cello Concerto under Daniel Barenboim, and listen to an excerpt from our new Recording of the Month, a beautiful performance of Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil from the Latvian Radio Choir and Sigvards Kļava.

This month on the Gramophone Player
The Gramophone Player opens with an excerpt from the February issue’s Recording of the Month: Rachmaninov's Vespers, All-Night Vigil, by the Latvian Radio Choir with conductor Sigvards Kļava (Ondine). Two very fine cellists are also represented: Christian Poltéra plays Barber's Cello Concerto (BIS) whilst Alisa Weilerstein's new recording of Elgar's Cello Concerto is coupled with Elliott Carter's Concerto (Decca). Lovers of Brahms's music are well catered for, too, with complete tracks from Jonathan Plowright's new recording of the Third Sonata (BIS) and Klaus Tennstedt leading the LPO in the First and Third Symphonies from 1994 (LPO).
