NEW RELEASES IN CELEBRATION OF HERBERT VON KARAJAN'S 100TH BIRTHDAY Dear Karajan Fans, In 2008 the musical world celebrates the 100th birthday of one of the most widely-respected conductors of the 20th century: Herbert von Karajan. To launch Karajan Year, Deutsche Grammophon has prepared a special limited-edition two-disc release (CD+DVD): Karajan - The music, the Legend. On our Herbert von Karajan Special Website you’ll find details about this and other releases, including Karajan Gold – a 2-CD compilation of favourite tracks, and Karajan Master Recordings, a 10-CD box of classic recordings from 1959 to 1979 (individual CDs also available separately). Further releases on CD include Eliette von Karajan: Mein Leben an seiner Seite (My Life at his Side), initially intended for German-speaking countries, to coincide with the publication of Eliette von Karajan’s autobiography in January. This is her personal selection, on 2 CDs, of favourite Karajan recordings. > Later, in the summer, a 5-CD box set of the concerto recordings of Anne-Sophie Mutter with Herbert von Karajan will be released (July), to be followed by four box sets of the Karajan Symphony Edition in August. On the DVD front, a whole range of releases is planned, starting in January with a Brahms Symphony cycle and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana in a Giorgio Strehler production from La Scala, Milan, coupled with Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, also from La Scala. These will be followed up in February with Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, Bruckner’s Eighth and Ninth Symphonies and Te Deum, and Wagner’s Das Rheingold. In March, in addition to Brahms’s German Requiem, there’s a 2-DVD set of Karajan in Concert, with orchestral music by Beethoven, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Rossini, Wagner and Weber with the Berliner Philharmoniker. In April, the month of the anniversary, a new film documentary directed by Robert Dornhelm will be released on DVD. Listen to some musical excerpts of Karajan - The music, the Legend on our E-Player.
