Gramophone at 90: leading critics recall their first Gramophone review
Gramophone Composer Guides: the best Camille Saint-Saëns recordingsIn celebration ofGramophone's first issue, published 90 years ago in April 1923, leading critics for the magazine recall their firstGramophone review. Richard Osborne looks back to 1973, the year of the magazine’s 50th anniversary, when he was asked by then editor Malcolm Walker to review an LP of early Callas recordings - but it was his review of Carlos Kleiber’s Beethoven Fifth with the Vienna Philharmonic on DG, published in June 1975, which really made an impact. Also making the trip down memory lane are Jeremy Nicholas, who first reviewed Wynton Marsalis’s All Riseconducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen (Sony Classical) in 2003, and Rob Cowan, who reviewed Brahms and Khachaturian Violin Concertos with Henryk Szeryng and the LSO under Antal Doráti (Mercury) in 1993.
