MARINA POPLAVSKAYA

Independent Tue, 26 Feb 2008 4:26 PM PSTI

f it's the ability to go the extra mile that marks out a star, then no wonder Marina Poplavskaya is already shining bright. When the Russian soprano appears as Tatyana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House in March, it will be the latest landmark in a career that has seen her making that additional effort time after time since childhood - sometimes by motorbike. It's no ...

Independent Mon, 25 Feb 2008 4:43 PM PST

There was a time when a body-double was used for Salome's Dance of the Seven Veils. Now it's a case of casting a soprano who has what it takes to remove that final veil. Or is it? In David McVicar's typically uncompromising new production, Nadja Michael's lissomly girlish Salome is wearing more at the end of her dance than at the start.

Carlos Gomes – documentos comentados

A ele a minha singela homenagem.

Danish soprano Inga Nielsen, who performed at La Scala, Vienna StateOpera, dies at 61

The Associated Press, February 11, 2008

Inga Nielsen, the Danish soprano who performed in some of the world'sleading opera houses, has died. She was 61.Nielsen died at a hospital in Copenhagen on Sunday, Royal Opera music director Michael Schoenwandt said Monday. He declined to give thecause of death, saying it was a private matter. Nielsen had sufferedfrom cancer in recent years. One of Denmark's best known sopranos, Nielsen performed on stagessuch as La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera and London's CoventGarden."She was unique. She was born with a great voice and at the sametime, she had a great feeling for musicality," Schoenwandt told TheAssociated Press. "The opera world has lost a big voice."Nielsen sang at festivals across Europe, including Bayreuth inGermany and Salzburg in Austria, Aix-en-Provence in France andEdinburgh, Scotland, as well as the Mostly Mozart festival in NewYork. The daughter of a Danish father and an Austrian mother, Nielsen was considered a musical prodigy as a child. She made her firstrecordings — Danish folk songs and Christmas carols — at the age ofnine. She began her professional career in 1971 as a soubrette atGelsenkirchen, in Germany's industrial Ruhr region. In 1975, she became an ensemble member of the Frankfurt Opera. Some of her most memorable performances came when shesang "Constance" in Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio" in Salzburg and when she played Salome in Richard Strauss' work of thesame name, Schoenwandt said.Although she was respected internationally and worked with such famedconductors as Herbert von Karajan and Giuseppe Sinopoli, thereclusive Nielsen never became a big star in her home country. Her first major appearance in Denmark wasn't until 1993, when shesang with Spanish tenor Placido Domingo at two outdoor concerts inCopenhagen. She also sang at the opening ceremony for the Storebaelt bridge in 1998, wearing her trademark red gown.In 2006, she made her last major public appearance at Copenhagen'sTivoli gardens to celebrate her 35 years as a professional singer.Nielsen was married briefly to American baritone Robert Hale. She had no children.

Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten

It's a seductive, sometimes shocking and viscerally exciting musical experience; the premier recording of an unconventional opera that made a major impact at its premiere in Geneva in 2002. Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten translates as 'Landscape with distant relatives', and trying to describe it is a bit of a nightmare…not least because Goebbels himself doesn't exactly revel in unpicking his music in front of critics and audiences.
